George Alexis Kellogg was born in Brooklyn, New York, March 7, 1916. He received his B.A. and B.S.L.S. degrees from Columbia University in 1940 and 1941 respectively, and his M.A. from Yale in 1947. On July 3, 1940 he married Ruth E. Heningham; they had two children. From 1940 to 1943 he was a librarian at Columbia University. He then served in World War II as a Marine Corps sergeant.
